Scarborough lies on the North Sea coast of Yorkshire, facing eastward towards Europe. Founded in 950 AD, Scarborough is a famous resort town that has given its name to daughter cities in Canada, the USA, Australia, the West Indies and elsewhere.
Modern Scarborough has a population approaching 40,000, and besides being the major holiday and resort centre of the Yorkshire Coast, it is home to residential communities, business, fishing and service industries.
Scarborough's attractions include the ruined Norman castle, which is 150 feet above the harbour, and dominates the central headland between the bays. It is open to visitors and provides extensive views as well as a backdrop to historic re-enactments. The Sea Life Centre at Scalby Mills on the North Bay displays the ecology of the North Sea, with an underwater walk and seal sanctuary. Olivers Mount is 500 feet above the town and provides a magnificent backdrop, and stunning views of the city and the sea beyond. Also the remarkable architecture of St Mary's Church and St Martin's Church, make these attractions worth a visit.
