Visit the Jorvik Viking Centre website.
Jorvik has just undergone an extensive £5 million refurbishment in order to reconstruct the facility using up-dated technology and most importantly, to utilise twenty years of continual archaeological analysis as it was applied to originally during the Coppergate excavations that were conducted at the site between 1976-1981. The refurbishment is just stunning and anyone with any interest in archaeology or viking history must come to visit.
In historic York, the past is all around you. Only at Jorvik is the spirit of the Vikings held captive for all time. At Jorvik you'll embark upon a journey of discovery, deep below the streets of York. On this very site, archaeologists uncovered what Viking life was really like. Now you too can see where the Vikings lived and traded when Erik Bloodaxe was king.
Jorvik explores the year 948 A.D with its busy market stalls, crowded houses, and the hustle and bustle of wharfside ships. At Jorvik, you come face to face with real characters from the past and experience the city's atmosphere, sounds and smells, all recreated from actual finds made on this site.
Travelling forward in time, the centre explores the year 1980 and the Coppergate Excavations. The remains of Jorvik are being painstakingly unearthed and Viking timber houses can be seen where they were actually found.
Hundreds of real objects, from the York Archaeological Trust's excavations on this site, are displayed in our modern gallery, where our resident 'Vikings' are on hand to tell you more about Viking crafts and customs.
